There are an estimated 3000 Americans with accutane-related birth defects. Accutane has been available through prescription as a treatment for severe acne since 1983. It is currently available in about 80 countries. According to the drugs warning label there is an extremely high risk of birth defects if a woman becomes pregnant while using Accutane. The risks exist even if the drug is used only briefly. Often a woman is taking accutane during the first 2-3 weeks after conception and may be unaware she is pregnant. Pregnant women or women who were likely to become pregnant should not have been prescribed the drug.
